NOTES AND ACTION ITEMS

1) Revise the Charter of the SIO Computer Committee to add provision to enforce network security. Also the charter should reflect the current computing environment. - Mick ?? will write a first draft ??

The current by-law reads:
"The committee is concerned with the enhancement of computing and electronic data transmission resources available to the SIO community. It advises the director, SIO, on such matters as large-scale digital networking, provision of consulting services, maintenance and acquisition of computer resources (processors and peripherals) for general SIO use, and recharge structure, if any, for computing/networking/consulting services."

2) Levels of support:
a) physical network connection (provided by UCSD as part of the MGN fee)
b) software connection of machine to wall
c) installation and maintenance of network security software in each machine
d) system administration and services (printing, backup,...)

The SIO Computer Committee should play a role in a), b) and perhaps c).

3) Mick Laver will circulate a draft proposal to add a surcharge to MGN to support a basic secure hookup for every computer at SIO.

4) SIO Computer Committee could provide the following basic information to SIO users:
-best practices for setting up a new computer
-a menu of recommended hardware
