1999-2000 The SIO Safety Committee met once this year. At this meeting the committee discussed its role at SIO and reaffirmed that it is advisory to the SIO Safety Officer. The committee discussed whether or not safe lab practices on research vessels should be addressed by the committee, but it was felt that there were no particular issues that needed attention at this time. The committee recommended that two actions would help increase safety at SIO: 1) Graduate students should receive safety training as part of orientation activities when they start at SIO. This would help stress the importance of safe lab practice and would be much more efficient than trying to persuade graduate students to attend safety seminars at other times. 2) All seawater drains should be labeled with a sign noting that these drains release seawater directing to the beaches. It was felt that this might not be widely recognized. The committee however knew of no incidences where dumping had occurred. A major goal of the committee during the next academic year should be to pursue the implementation of these recommendations. Brian Palenik Chair, SIO Safety Committee |
