Editorial and Publications Committee Annual Report 2005-2006

The Editorial and Publications Committee oversees the scientific content of Scripps publications, including Explorations (both print and video versions), Technical Reports, and the new Scripps working site of the UC eScholarship Digital Repository. The Committee also acts as science advisor to the SIO Multimedia Group.

The committee met 2 times in the academic year 2005-06 in October, 2005 and again in April, 2006.

The following agenda items were discussed in the first meeting:

(1) Explorations: story ideas. There was considerable discussion concerning the following story ideas: Mexico connection (tie-ins with CICESE; bilingual stories?); Naming of campus buildings (who is Ritter; Vaughan); Global change and hurricanes; Climate change and disease; Venice project. Special issue ideas, natural hazards, coordination with Aquarium activities. Voyager (kids) stories?
(2) Explorations: improving the appearance: captions and photos; more photos/less text;
(3) Explorations: Video. Background music; links to UCSD TV
(4) Annual Report: Update on latest report. Mail to all alumni; financial reporting needs better lay-out.

The following agenda items were discussed in the second meeting

(1) How do we improve the Research Activities section on the SIO web-site. Better links and more information required.
(2) Discussion on open access publishing of SIO PhD dissertations and masters
theses to the SIO eScholarship Repository site. Do we want only PDF files or hard copies?
(3) Publication status of SIO Annual Reports to the SIO eScholarship Repository site.
(4) Ideas for future Exporations stories (The SIO library has been
suggested - who is Eckert, special collections, map room, archive, facilities, resources, etc.

Respectively submitted,

David Hilton
