2000-2001 ANNUAL REPORT TO THE STAFF COUNCIL The Marine Sciences Physical Planning Committee (MSPPC) met 8 times between September 1999 and July 2000 under the chairmanship of Jonathan Berger. Major and minor action items approved by the Committee are listed below. Major Action Items: 1. Marine Sciences Development Shop (MSDS) Relocation. Site approval for the development of a replacement MSDS in Seaweed Canyon. The existing machine shop will be displaced by the proposed SIO Commons. The new facility will be approximately 10,000 gross square feet including the ground floor and a mezzanine. It will include a high bay space with overhead crane, two roll-up doors, a welding shop and outdoor staging area. Minor Action Items: 1. Center for Atmospheric Science (CAS) Instrument Tower. The committee approved siting of instrumentation in two locations on the Nierenberg Hall rooftop. 2. Commemorative Benches. The committee voted to approve two new commemorative bench locations on an existing concrete pad south of the SIO pier as requested by the SIO Development Office. 3. Fencing along the Bluff. The committee approved a permanent 4-foot, green vinyl-coated fence to replace the temporary fencing along the bluff west of T-29 extending north to the existing barricade on the roadway shoulder. Associated warning signage and landscaping will be included. The action is intended primarily to ensure the safety of small children attending events at T-29. 4. Coffee Cart and Deck at the SIO Library. This project will provide a centrally-located gathering place for the SIO community. It includes an accessible outdoor deck and vendor-operated cart serving coffee, pastries and perhaps deli sandwiches. Items Under Consideration: 1. Southwest Fisheries. The National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration?s consultants, in coordination with UCSD staff, continue to explore options to develop new space for Southwest Fisheries on or near their current site, with the anticipation of removal of existing structures that are currently geologically compromised. Bluff stabilization, while included as an alternative, is not being seriously pursued any longer due to significant environmental and political constraints. 2. Comprehensive Planning of Commemorative Bench Sites. The committee is considering preparation of a larger plan for the SIO campus for potential commemorative bench locations, taking into consideration the Pawka Green landscape improvements and changes that will be brought about by construction of the SIO Commons. The committee wishes to be sure that these will be enjoyable places for people to sit, rather than be selected solely for purposed of fundraising. Respectfully Submitted, Jonathan Berger Chair, MSPPC Cc: J. Desch, Executive Secretary, MSPPC Cpo:Novell\cpo\Wpdata\comtee\msppc\sioannualreport00-01.doc |
