- The G.Unger Vetlesen Foundation continued its generous support for global change research with an award to SIO of $850,000. The foundation is now in its thirteenth consecutive year of providing funding for Scripps.
- To honor Mike Mullin's commitment to graduate education at Scripps Institution of Oceanography and his intent as expressed in a trust document, the Mullin family established the Michael M. Mullin Graduate Student Fellowship in Biological Oceanography. Thanks to the generosity of those who knew Mike, the $50,000 minimum to establish a memorial endowment has been met.
- Mia Tegners family, colleagues, and friends have made significant gifts toward the Mia J. Tegner Memorial Fellowship to support graduate study at Scripps.
- The Joan Irvine Smith and Athalie R. Clarke Foundation made a challenge grant of $25,000 for a student fellowship in memory of Mia Tegner. A number of SIO Cabinet members have pledged gifts toward the match.
- SIO Council Chair Lou Simpson made a gift of $1,000,000 to assist in the recruitment of a director for the planned Center for Marine Genomics, Biotechnology, and Biomedicine.
- At the recommendation of Mr. and Mrs. Maurice C. Kaplan, the San Diego Foundation gave $150,000 to make it possible for SIO to purchase a Micro Array/Reader for the planned Center for Marine Genomics, Biotechnology and Biomedicine.
- Also at the recommendation of Mr. and Mrs. Maurice C. Kaplan, the San Diego Foundation made a challenge grant of $100,000 for the Robert Paine Scripps Center. Members of the SIO Directors Cabinet have met the challenge.
- Scripps family member Robert Scripps gave $50,000, to be used at the Birch Aquarium. A long-time supporter, Bob has been extremely generous to the aquarium.
- The Maurice J. Masserini Charitable Trust gave $50,000 in support of the Birch Aquarium.
- The Los Angeles ARCS continued their support for SIO students with a gift of $53,600. In all, the Los Angeles ARCS chapter has contributed more than $700,000 for this purpose.
- The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation gave $40,000 in support of the UC Revelle Program in Climate Science and Policy.
- The Green Foundation for Earth Sciences continued its support for the Cecil H. and Ida M. Green Institute for Geophysics and Planetary Physics.
- The Nierenberg family made a gift to establish the Nierenberg Prize for Science in the Public Interest. The first Nierenberg Prize was awarded on May 20 to Harvard Professor E.O.Wilson.
Other development news:
- The SIO Feasibility/Planning Study recommended a campaign goal of $60-70M, which will be reviewed at the end of the year.
- Charlie Kennel presented the Amici cum Laude award to Kathleen Healy. The award is given at the discretion of the director to recognize formally those who have provided extraordinary friendship and support to the institution. It is the highest honor that Scripps can bestow upon a community member.
- At its annual awards dinner, E.W. Scripps Associates honored three individuals who have help further SIO's presence in the community. Mia Tegner received the Community Outreach Award, ChiPs received the Leadership Award, and Wells Fargo Bank was named Benefactor of the Year.
