All students are encouraged to apply for extramural pre-doctoral fellowships, such as NSF, in addition to those administered by the university. Many applications for funding are due early Fall. It contains programs that offer training and research funding for graduate students. EXTERNAL FELLOWSHIPS
American Geological Institute (AGI)

Recipients of AGI Geoscience Student Scholarships are provided with small financial awards and matched with a mentor from the geoscience community to foster whole professional development of the awardee. Each award consists of both scholarship support as well as support for professional development experiences for successful candidates. Professional development experiences that qualify include field camp, professional society memberships, and/or travel and registration to a professional meeting of one of AGI’s member societies. Qualifications include being United States citizens, having a verifiable ethnic-minority status as Black, Hispanic, or Native American (American Indian, Eskimo, Hawaiian, or Samoan) and a full time student in geosciences and currently taking courses toward a Ph.D degree. American Meteorological Society Graduate Fellowship (AMS)

The AMS Graduate Fellowships are sponsored by industry leaders and government agencies and are designed to attract promising young scientists to prepare for careers in the atmospheric and related oceanic and hydrologic fields. The stipend of $23,000 is presented to each fellowship recipient for a nine-month period, and partial travel support is provided to attend the annual AMS meeting. Association for Women Geoscientists Fellowship (ASG)

Association for Women In Science Scholarship Program (AWIS)

The San Diego Chapter of the Association for Women in Science offers scholarships to undergraduate and graduate women, in San Diego County, who are in pursuit of a career in science. The award will include a complimentary one-year membership in AWIS and attendance at an awards dinner/reception. Eligibility: Female students actively engaged in a degree program in the upcoming academic year may apply. Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. Department of Energy Office of Science Graduate Fellowship

The Department of Energy Office of Science (DOESC) has established the following fellowship to support outstanding PhD students pursuing graduate studies in the following fields: physics, chemistry, biology, math, engineering, computational sciences and environmental sciences relevant to the Office of Science. The fellowship provides partial tuition support, an annual stipend of $35,000 for living expenses and a research stipend of $5,000 for full-time graduate student and thesis/dissertation research at a U.S. academic institution for three years. Fulbright Program

Lawrence Scholar Program

Link Foundation Ocean Engineering and Instrumentation Fellowship Program

Doctoral candidates are eligible to submit a research proposal for a $25,000 grant. Preference will be shown to proposals dealing directly with ocean engineering and ocean instrumentation, which explore ideas not fully tested rather than to further development of programs already in progress.

National Science Foundation: East Asia and Pacific Summer Institutes for U.S. Graduate Students (EAPSI)

The East Asia and Pacific Summer Institutes (EAPSI) provide U.S. graduate students in science and engineering: 1) first hand research experiences in Australia, China, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, Singapore or Taiwan; 2) an introduction to the science, science policy and scientific infrastructure of the respective location; and 3) an orientation to the society, culture and language. NOAA MPOWIR Internship Program

NOAA Sea Grant Fellowship Program

The award for each Fellowship, contingent upon the availability of Federal funds, will be in the form of a grant or cooperative agreement of $38,500. The Robert and Patricia Switzer Foundation Fellowship

The goal of the Switzer Environmental Fellowship Program is to support highly talented graduate students in New England and California whose studies are directed towards improving environmental quality and who demonstrate the potential for leadership in their field. The Fellowship provides a one-year $15,000 cash award for graduate students as well as networking and leadership support to awardees. This NSF funded Integrative Graduate Education and Research Training (IGERT) award supports graduate training in Global Change, Marine Ecosystems, and Society. One and two year fellowships are available for motivated PhD students from any UCSD department. Fellowships are available to US Citizens and permanent residents only. National Science Foundation GK-12 Program

The NSF GK-12 program is funded by a National Science Foundation GK-12 grant, the Scripps Fellowship Program awards 12 month, $30,000 fellowships to eligible PhD students. Each Fellow will partner with a middle or high school teacher to develop compelling, inquiry-based science labs, activities and lessons that support the Teacher’s science curriculum. In the summer, Fellows and Teachers mentor one another in a four-week summer institute focused on pedagogical techniques, lab/lesson design strategies, and the Fellows’ research activities. During the academic year, Fellows spend a maximum of 10 hours a week co-teaching in the Teacher’s classrooms and 2-5 hours a week in on-campus enrichment activities including communications and pedagogy training and career development. President’s Year Dissertation Fellowship

The Office of the President has allotted UCSD four President's Dissertation Year Fellowships. The program is designed to identify doctoral candidates who have been educationally or economically disadvantaged or whose research or planned career direction focuses on problems related to disadvantaged segments of society. Dissertation Year Fellowships are to be awarded to promising students in the final stages of their doctoral work who demonstrate strong potential for university teaching and research. Dissertation Fellows receive a stipend of $22,000 and a research/travel allowance of $490. Departments are required to pay the Fellow's in-state fees and student health insurance fees from graduate fellowships or other departmental funds.
